Full semester abroad:
Students will live with a local host family for maximum cultural and lingual immersion. Our host families are very fun, caring, friendly and open. A pre-departure questionnaire ensures that students are matched with a host family determined to be the most compatible in respect to background, interests, language proficiency and expectations of the culture and language exchange.  A common phrase in Galapagos is “hay que vivir la vida y no dejar que la vida te viva” which loosely translates to enjoying and living each day to its fullest.

As such, much of the family life takes place outside in a relaxed and slow-paced manner.  Beyond cultural differences, be prepared to encounter a living standard you are not used to, homes are sparsely and simply furnished.  But, no worries, you will get used to it quickly and learn that living with less can be a freeing and great experience.   Few families speak English, hence it is preferable that students have at least a basic level of conversational Spanish.  However, there is an Academic Coordinator on-site who serves as an intermediary between the families and students who will help facilitate the culture and language exchange.
