Ecotourism in fragile systems (3 cr)
Synopsis:
You will learn about the structure and dynamics of the biosphere, the characteristics of different ecosystems, their interactions with human population and the importance of this relation for tourism in fragile Ecosystems such as Galapagos.
We will look at population as a major part of ecosystems how local community structures and dynamics impact on this system, populations dynamics; intra- and inter-specific competition and the importance of sustainable management of ecosystems when developing tourism projects.

Marine mammal field observation and monitoring (3cr)
Synopsis:
Introduction to cetacean biology, behavior and presence in the Galapagos environment. The course will be largely field bases and include lots of boat time. We will conduct boat-based surveys to monitor marine mammal presence in the Archipelago. At the same time, we collect audio recordings, video recordings (above and below water), and digital photographs to identify individual animals to determine residency patterns.
